Course overview

Find out more about our MSc course from this video

The Advanced Mechanical Engineering (AME) MSc course is the only MSc course offered by the Mechanical Engineering Department and is a well-established course with more than 30 years history. It is intended as a prestigious and deliberately small course (40 highly selected students).

The Mechanical Engineering Department has more than 100 staff, 200 PhD students and more than 500 undergraduate students and is one of the largest mechanical engineering departments in Europe. The department hosts 10 industry sponsored Centres of Excellence. The department was ranked 10th in the World by both the 2022 QS World University rankings and the 2023 Times Higher Education World university rankings. As an important group within the department the AME students share the large amount of research and teaching facilities of the department.

As an essential part (50%) of the AME course you will choose a research project which will be carried out within one of the many research groups in the department, some of which are listed below:

In the other half of the course, the taught part, you will choose 6-10 modules from a broad range of topics listed here.

Careers following the AME course

Once qualified, students typically go on to work in industry or continue studying for a PhD. The top two performing students will be awarded a PhD Scholarship that covers full tuition fees as well as a maintenance allowance at the standard yearly rate. (More information on recent graduate destinations can be found here.

Entry Requirements

If you are studying at a UK university, we require at least a first class honours degree, and typical offers are made at a higher (often significantly higher) level than a 70% average.

If you are studying overseas we look for an undergraduate degree passed at an equivalent level to that described for UK degrees. The guidance on international qualifications provides information on Imperial College's minimum entry requirements and equivalency of grades. Please note that the AME course requirements are significantly higher than the College’s minimum requirements.

You will also need to meet Imperial College's standard English language requirement. You do not need to have met the English language requirement when you make your application.

From Chinese universities we only consider applicants from Key or Project 211 universities who are likely to graduate with a final overall mark of 85% and typically offers are made at a higher level.

From US universities we only consider applicants who are likely to graduate with a final overall mark higher than 3.5/4 and typically offers are made at a significantly higher level.

From German universities we only consider applicants who are likely to graduate with a final overall mark less than 2.0 and typically offers are made at the 1.8 or better  level.

From Spanish universities we only consider applicants who are likely to graduate with a final overall mark higher than 7.8 and typically offers are made at a significantly higher level.

From Greek universities we only consider applicants who are likely to graduate with a final overall mark higher than 8 and typically offers are made at a significantly higher level.

Course statistics

The course is intended to recruit the strongest students from around the world and hence the course is small (less than 40 students), while the number of applicants is typically greater than 500 (see statistics below). The competition for offers is intense, accordingly, the students who do join the course typically do very well (see results in Table below).
