Portrait - Cecilia

Cecilia Mattevi is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London since October 1, 2012. Her research interests centre on science and engineering of novel 2D atomically thin semiconducting materials to enable applications in optoelectronics and energy storage.  Mattevi’s research group focuses on the synthesis of these materials, developing tunability of their characteristics, and on the fabrication of devices based on planar structures and on highly porous 3D hierarchical structures where a diverse range of assembly methods is employed.

Cecilia’s current funding supports: science and engineering of 2D semiconducting materials (EPSRC 1st grant, EPSRC-Royal Society fellowship engagement, The Royal Society University Research Fellowship), the development of methods for large scale synthesis of graphene for applications in different technology areas from energy storage to polymer/ceramic composite materials (EPSRC-Graphene Engineering), engineering large scale implementation of graphene-composite (Petronas), and energy applications of graphene derivatives (EU-Graphene Flagship).

Prior to this appointment Cecilia, gained her PhD in Materials Science in 2008 undertaking her doctoral research at the European Synchrotron Facility Elettra, Trieste, IT. Cecilia then joined the group of Prof. Manish Chhowalla in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Rutgers University, NJ, USA as a postdoctoral associate where she worked on chemically derived graphene for large area optoelectronic applications. In 2010, Cecilia joined Imperial as Junior Research Fellow.

Postdoctoral Researchers
Dr Nagaraju Goli
Goli

Nagaraju received his Master’s degree (2012) in Chemistry from Acharya Nagarjuna University, Andhra Pradesh, India. He was then awarded Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from Kyung Hee University, South Korea in 2017, where his investigation was mainly based on the fabrication and working chemistry of electrochemical asymmetric/hybrid supercapacitors. He also worked as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Kyung Hee University for two years. Currently, he is working as Research Associate in Dr Mattevi Group, Imperial College London. His research focus transmits on the fabrication of emerging two-dimensional (2D) materials and 3D-printed flexible electrodes for high-performance micro-batteries and metal-ion capacitors.

PhD Students
Mr Gang Cheng
Gang Cheng

Gang completed his MEng degree in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London. His research focuses on heterostructure of transition metal dichalcogenides and their optoelectronic properties.

In September 2018, he was awarded the CSC Scholarship and joined the Mattevi group as a Ph.D. candidate. His project mainly focuses on Semiconducting 2D materials: synthesis and electronic devices.

Ms Rachael Quintin-Baxendale

Rachael was awarded her MEng Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Exeter, UK in 2020. Her master’s thesis investigated graphene coated textiles for the application of wearable electronics. In October 2020, Rachael joined the Mattevi Group as a PhD student.

Mr Haoyu Bai

Haoyu was awarded his MEng degree from Wuhan University of Technology, China. His master thesis focused on the liquid exfoliation of 2D clay nanosheets and the nanofluidic channel arrays assembled by clay nanosheets.

In October 2021, Haoyu was awarded with the CSC-Imperial scholarship and joined the Mattevi group as a Ph.D. student. His research is now focusing on the large-area synthesis of 2D magnetic materials.

Mr Evan Fisher

Evan was awarded their MEng in materials science and engineering from Imperial College London in 2022. Their Master’s thesis focussed on negative linear compressibility and negative thermal expansion in transition metal-based molecular framework materials.

They joined the Mattevi Group as a PhD student in October 2022, researching the 3D printing of flexible batteries for wearable electronics.

Mr Lifu Zhang

Lifu was awarded MSc in Advanced Material Science (Energy Storage) from University College London, where he focused on the design and synthesis of multifunctional strain sensor based on multilayered graphene for wearable electronics.

In January 2023, Lifu joined the Mattevi Group in Imperial College London as a PhD student with research focusing on the phase engineering and application of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs).
