Thomas Mills - PhD Student 2022-Present

I graduated from the University of Oxford in 2022 with an MChem in Chemistry. In my Master's project I worked in the Vallance group, combining mass spectrometry with machine learning to identify patients at high risk of mortality post-heart attack.

In September 2022 I began my PhD at Imperial College, working in the Barnard, Kuimova and Byrne groups. I am working on the use of molecular rotors as probes to visualise protein-protein interaction in cells.

Lucy Dan - PhD Student 2023-Present

I received my BSc in Biological Sciences at Durham University. I then completed an MRes in Adam Benham's group at Durham University investigating the role of autophagy in oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

I started a CRUK Convergence Science PhD in October 2023 working with the Barnard, Greber (Institute of Cancer Research) and Barr (MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences) groups. My PhD project investigates the potential for novel p21-disrupting peptides to prevent quiescence and cancer cell resistance to chemotherapy.

Sinead McCann - PhD Student 2023-Present

In July 2022, I graduated from Queen's University Belfast with an MChem degree in Medicinal Chemistry. I completed my Master's research project in the Knipe group where I synthesised a foldamer stabilised through dipolar repulsion.

After graduating, I worked at Pfizer Ireland before starting my PhD in October 2023 in the Barnard and Fuchter groups working on developing photoswitchable stapled peptides as PPI inhibitors.

Aristo Kong - PhD Student 2023-Present

With a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Toronto, I joined Professor Ed Tate’s group as an MRes student at the Imperial College. After two years as a synthetic chemist at Pfizer, I am back at Imperial College now as a PhD student in the Department of Clinical Sciences.

My PhD project focuses on identifying inhibitors for HORMAD1, a meiotic protein with significant implications in oncology. My research project is a collaboration between the Martinez-Perez, Fuchter, and Barnard groups.

Yasmin Gariba-Hamilton - PhD Student 2024-Present

I graduated from King's College London in 2021 with an MSci in Chemistry. Since then, I've been working in industry as a research scientist for a biotechnology start-up, FreshCheck, who make hygiene verification systems for early-stage prevention against microbial outbreaks.

In 2024, I started my PhD with a joint project between FreshCheck and the Barnard Group. I am working on methods for accurate detection and characterisation of siderophores secreted by microbials growing environments conducive to real world settings
