In this masterclass run by Imperial’s Public Engagement team (open to both Imperial doctoral students and staff), participants gain an understanding of the value of public engagement activities as a pathway to research impact and how embedding these in applications for funding can strengthen their chances of success. It is particularly relevant for anyone involved in developing funding proposals involving public engagement with research.

During the course, participants gain an understanding of the UK higher education funding landscape and explore how funders view public engagement as a form of knowledge exchange and route to societal impacts. Participants consider how engagement might lead to societal impacts for their own research areas, develop plans for effective public engagement that could lead to research impact, and how to evidence the difference made through engagement activities.

Participants are strongly advised to attend the GS accredited Core Public Engagement Masterclass, or have equivalent skills, before attending this session.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this course, participants will be better able to:

  • Recognise the wider context of funding for public engagement, impact and knowledge exchange within higher education
  • Interpret public engagement funding criteria
  • Describe the value and potential impact(s) of your public engagement activities, for audiences, researchers and funders

Please note:

  • Information about other Masterclasses offered to doctoral students and staff by Imperial’s Societal Engagement Team is available here.
