With increasing recognition of public engagement as a route to research impact, engaging non-specialist audiences is a core skill for doctoral students to develop and practice. This interactive and skills focused masterclass, offered by Imperial’s Public Engagement team, is open to both Imperial staff and doctoral students and supports participants to build their knowledge and practice of how to communicate and engage non-specialist public audiences with their work throughout the research cycle.

Participants are strongly advised to attend the GS accredited Core Public Engagement Masterclass, or have equivalent skills, before attending this session.

Learning Outcomes: 

Following completion of this course, participants will be better able to:

  • Identify and articulate key messages to share in their public engagement activities 
  • Use appropriate language to communicate with a diverse range of public audiences
  • Apply a variety of techniques to engage different target audiences
  • Develop confidence and motivation to communicate with public audiences

Please note:  

  • Doctoral students who wish to gain presentation skills relating to conferences, seminars and posters are recommended to attend the courses in the GS Research Communication Programme’s ‘Perfecting Presentations’ Suite.
