Supporting Supervision of PGT/UG Students

This course aims to introduce PhD students who will be supporting the supervision of UG or PGT research projects to the key settings and skills of the role. Supporting and supervising students carrying out short term research projects bring specific challenges and require effective management and communication skills. In this course, participants will do practical exercises to assess and develop their skills, and to receive advice from experienced GTAs on how to deal with challenging situations.

During the course, participants will have the opportunity to:

• Explore the extent and limits of the role and responsibilities involved in supporting supervision
• Discuss and reflect on some of the challenges of supporting PGT/UG students’ research projects
• Practice essential communication skills required to guide, give feedback and support students

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

• Recognise key responsibilities in supporting supervision of UG/PGT research projects
• Establish effective relationships with students
• Be empathic and support the students/projects appropriately
• Apply appropriate strategies to promote students’ learning and autonomy
