Tutor's tip
"I have a simple rule for being a Personal Tutor: be available and be competent (that is, be able to answer student questions, or know who to ask if you’re not sure of the answer)." (Personal Tutor, Department of Materials)
Although timely referral or involving others is important, remember that you are your tutee’s only named Personal Tutor and it is important that they feel they can return to you to follow-up and discuss things further or explore other options. Here are several suggestions for doing this:
- Ask the student to come back and see you next week/in two weeks to let you know how they are getting along;
- Ask the student to email you;
- Ask the student to give permission to any service or individual supporting them to share information with you, as appropriate. The Student Counselling Service does not share student information.
