Before making a self referral
If recommendations on adjustments to undertake your role are expected, or if your line manager wants a report on your health concern from Occupational Health, you should ask them to complete a staff referral from your line manager or Human Resources advisor.
If you have concerns about the relationship between your work and health, you should discuss these concerns with your line manager in the first instance. Your manager will refer to Occupational Health for advice on first-line support and adjustments. An Occupational Health practitioner can only make recommendations if a referral has been completed.
Contact a local Mental Health First Aider / Confidential Care for advice if you are concerned about your mental wellbeing. There are a range of resources on the Health and Wellbeing website. If you cannot discuss these issues with your line manager, you should contact the designated Human Resources Advisor.
If you have ergonomic concerns or need specific workstation equipment, please discuss them with your departmental computer health assessor and line manager. You do not need OH approval to get a new chair or standing desk, as these decisions are made locally. The Computer Health Assessor has details of equipment that can be obtained from our preferred supplier including how to self-refer to Occupational Health to access the workstation equipment trial area.
If you have concerns relating to your work with biological agents, laboratory animals or chemicals or any accidental exposures, make sure to self-refer, as our qualified staff will undertake an assessment referring to available risk assessments for this work.

Neurodiversity Related Support
Where concerns about neurodiversity arise it can cause worry for employees and managers alike. Occupational Health (OH) does not advise specifically on neurodiversity support but can provide support where there are coexisting health-orientated matters such as mental ill-health. In these situations we recommend seeking advice from the Equality Diversity and Inclusion Centre (EDIC) in the first instance and if required this can be followed up with an OH referral.
