Who should attend?

The workshop is well suited to staff who are already working at Senior Fellowship level, or those who intend to develop their practice to take on more strategic leadership, staff management, learning and teaching committee work, or other forms of educational practice with impact beyond their direct engagement with students.

Specifically, the workshop is relevant to:

  • Staff responsible for the leadership, management, or organisation of programmes, subjects and/or disciplinary areas;
  • Staff whose practice involves guiding, mentoring or influencing other colleagues in their learning and teaching practice; 
  • Staff with recognised teaching and learning expertise who can demonstrate a sustained record of influence at a departmental, disciplinary or institutional level, or beyond.

This workshop opens by Introducing the Imperial STAR Framework and the role of Advance HE, with an overview of the Professional Standards Framework (PSF 2023). The session will then move on to present the Senior Fellowship level Descriptor (D3), and explore how participants’ experience aligns with the D3 criteria. The workshop will also introduce the application and review process, and will highlight the criteria against which all applications will be considered.

Participants will receive guidance on how to complete their Reflective Account of Practice and their two Case Studies, which together form the heart of a Senior Fellowship application, in an appropriately reflective and scholarly style. They will also be able to identify opportunities for further professional development in learning and teaching. 

Key areas

  • Describing the STAR Framework and the Professional Standards Framework (PSF 2023)
  • Defining the SFHEA (D3) Descriptor category and considering how participants’ practice relates to this
  • Identifying areas for professional development and opportunities to address them
  • Formulating a plan for completing a D3 application in an appropriately reflective and scholarly style

Prerequisite

There is no prerequisite as such for participants who currently hold AFHEA or FHEA. Participants who might be new to STAR or to the Professional Standards Framework are encouraged to engage with the support materials available on the STAR Framework website prior to attending the workshop.
