This coaching skills training is intended for medical educators who have a pastoral, supervisory and/or mentoring role (e.g. Educational Supervisors, Personal Tutors or Career Champions) for undergraduate medical students at Imperial.

Coaching in medical education is about creating a different type of relationship in teaching and learning settings, resulting in a genuinely inclusive, student-centred form of dialogue, enabling students to take responsibility for their own learning and development. This course will enable participants to gain a better understanding of what coaching is and learn coaching skills that can be put into practice immediately in their medical educator roles.

In session 1 (3hrs) participants will gain familiarity with coaching principles and an inclusive coaching approach to conversations, including how to offer feedback effectively, with time to practice and to discuss how to apply these skills within medical educator roles. This session needs to be completed before attending session 2.

Session 2 (3hrs) will further reinforce and deepen coaching skills. Participants are encouraged to practice their coaching skills within their work contexts between sessions 1 and 2. This session will include time for discussion and debrief of experiences and further opportunities for developing and practicing coaching skills with feedback.
