Parents Gabriela Salomao Martins and Felipe Saliba de Souza e Almeida who are geologist and Ahmed Alghuraybi a PhD researcher at Imperial’s Basins Research Group demonstrated an experiment that involved the study of rocks. The children were provided with different rock samples and were asked to identify their differences in terms of size, shape, colour and texture.
The children particularly enjoyed and had fun during the part of the experiment where they used a microscope. They used the microscope to examine a thin section of a sample rock and appreciated the range of scales the parents use to study the Earth and how drastically different rocks appear under a microscope.
Overall, the experiment provided a great interactive and sensory experience for the children. A big thank you to our parents for taking part in science month with us.
