Academic English for STEMM communication
Overview
The Centre for Academic English provides an extensive range of courses and workshops to develop the academic STEMM communication competence of Imperial academics, researchers, students, and native and non-native speakers.
We provide training for external academic communication for Imperial staff and researchers (including doctoral students), including writing research papers for publication, presenting at conferences, writing grant applications, and writing for the REF.
Our provision for first-year undergraduates up to final-year doctoral students responds to their academic communication needs at each stage of their studies, including writing a lab report, presenting a poster, writing a literature review, writing a thesis – and many more.
Imperial Doctoral Academic Communication Requirement
After fulfilling the English language entry requirement for admission, all doctoral students must fulfil the Imperial Doctoral Academic Communication Requirement (DACR). This is done by taking the DACR Assessment 1. Depending on the result of this initial assessment, students may also need to have a progress check (DACR Assessment 2) as part of the Early Stage Assessment (ESA) carried out by their department.
How to fulfil the Requirement
Students must take the first available assessment (DACR Assessment 1) after fully registering onto their doctoral programme within three months of the registration date. This is because the Requirement aims to identify those who need to improve their writing competence as soon as possible and to ensure they can access support in the first nine months of their doctoral programme.
For further information, please see the DACR webpage.
Evening Class Programme
The 2-term Evening Class programme run by the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication (located on Level 3 of the Sherfield Building) is open to all staff at Imperial. You will be able to attend a range of Evening Classes in various languages at various levels and classes in Creative Writing, Pleasures of Music, Music Technology and Film Appreciation.
Groups are no bigger than 20 and attract students from Imperial, other nearby colleges, and members of the general public.
For further information, including course descriptions, fees and enrolment details, please visit the Humanities website or contact the Humanities Administrator (humanities@imperial.ac.uk - extension 48756).
