Interpreting Power Anisotropy Measurements in Plasma Turbulence
, The Astrophysical Journal Letters, Vol: 711, Pages: L79-L83, ISSN: 2041-8205A relationship is derived between power anisotropy and wavevector anisotropy in turbulent fluctuations. This can be used to interpret plasma turbulence measurements, for example, in the solar wind. If fluctuations are spatially anisotropic, then the ion gyroscale break point in measured spectra in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field would not occur at the same frequency, and similarly for the electron gyroscale break point. This is an important consideration when interpreting solar wind measurements in terms of anisotropic turbulence theories. Model magnetic field power spectra are presented assuming a cascade of critically balanced Alfvén waves in the inertial range and kinetic Alfvén waves in the dissipation range. The variation of power anisotropy with scale is compared to existing solar wind measurements, and the similarities and differences are discussed.

The Variation of SolarWind Correlation Lengths OverThree Solar Cycles
, Solar Physics, Vol: 262, Pages: 191-198, ISSN: 0038-0938We present the results of a study of solar wind velocity and magnetic field correlation lengths over the last 35 years. The correlation length of the magnetic field magnitude λ|B| increases on average by a factor of two at solar maxima compared to solar minima. The correlation lengths of the components of the magnetic field λBXYZ and of the velocity λVYZ do not show this change and have similar values, indicating a continual turbulent correlation length of around 1.4 × 106 km. We conclude that a linear relation between λ|B|, VB2, and Kp suggests that the former is related to the total magnetic energy in the solar wind and an estimate of the average size of geoeffective structures, which is, in turn, proportionalto VB2. By looking at the distribution of daily correlation lengths we show that the solarminimum values of λ|B| correspond to the turbulent outer scale. A tail of larger λ|B| values is present at solar maximum causing the increase in mean value.

Application of penetrators within the solar system
, Advances in Geosciences: Volume 19: Planetary Science (PS), Pages: 307-320High impact velocity, instrumented space probes - Penetrators, have the potential to become an important part of the portfolio of planetary exploration technologies. The UK Penetrator Consortium is building upon existing heritage in this area. Presented here is an overview of potential applications, a consideration of technology issues and a description of the highly successful full-scale trials undertaken at Pendine in May 2008.
