AB - This project has shown that with the extension of the VUV range of the IC FT spectrometer down to 140nm and a Penning light source, the urgently needed improvements in accuracy of the laboratory atomic data for doubly ionized species are now possible. An extensive study of Fe III is in progress and will be followed by other studies of doubly charged transition group ions, e.g., Ni III and Mn III. This work was supported by NASA Grant NAGW-4888 to Harvard University, by the Paul Instrument Fund of the Royal Society, by an SAO Innovative Research & Development Grant, a NATO grant for International Collaboration in Research, by PPARC of the UK, and by the Royal Society. The authors gratefully acknowledge the advice and assistance of, R. Kling, M. Kock, C. Heise, R. C. M. Learner, W. Mende, W. H. Parkinson, and particularly D. S. Leckrone.
