    Jane Lac Operations Director

    Biography

    Jane has overall responsibility for the operational and financial management of the ISST. She is responsible for financial planning, the implementation of the Institute’s strategy against its mission, the development of its education portfolio, and leads on the Security and Resilience MSc as Co-Director.

    Eva Konstantara Institute Coordinator

    Biography

    Eva joined the ISST as the Institute Coordinator in March 2023, supporting the core team from an operational standpoint across education, research, and innovation. She has a wealth of experience, working in a specialist NHS Trust during the COVID-19 pandemic and graduating with a BSc in Forensic Science from the University of West London in 2019.

    Biography

    Catriona is the MSc Coordinator for the MSc Security and Resilience: Science & Technology course, providing support for students whilst ensuring the smooth planning and delivery of the programme. She joined the ISST in 2022 and has worked in University administration since 2017.

    Furrah Hussain RITICS Programme Manager

    Biography

    Furrah manages the Research Institute in Trustworthy Inter-connected Cyber-Physical Systems (RITICS), having previously worked in healthcare, events and customer service. She has a BSc in Forensic Science and an MSc in Security and Resilience: Science and Technology. As part of her MSc she participated in the Hacking for Defence module, the results of which were utilised by the British Army.

    Anna Friman Project Officer, Security and Societal Resilience Policy

    Biography

    Anna is a Project Officer and Researcher on Societal Resilience and Security. She has led the development of the Centre for Active Resilience and Security (CARS) and works on research projects focused on enhancing British and European security and resilience capabilities. Anna holds a MSc in War Studies/Total Defense.

    Anissa joined the ISST in August 2024 as Communications Manager, leading on the Institute's digital media output and MSc marketing activity. Previously, she has worked at the British Science Association and alongside the pharma industry through conference production and account management at a medical communications agency.

    Tatiana Dia Business Intelligence and Engagement Officer for the Security, Privacy, Identity, and Trust Engagement Network Plus (SPRITE+)

    Biography

    Tatiana plays a key role in various initiatives aimed at enhancing the understanding of crucial TIPS (Trust, Identity, Privacy, and Security) themes within the industry and fostering collaboration between academic institutions and non-academic partners. Tatiana previously worked as an academic in management and innovation at several UK universities, as well as a management consultant.

    Qiong Wang CARS Centre Manager

    Biography

    Qiong joined the ISST as the Centre Manager for the Centre for Active Resilience and Security (CARS) in November 2024, delivering the Centre’s mission and programme of activities across research, internal and external engagement, innovation and education. Previously, she led the international research and innovation pre-award operations team at Queen Mary University of London and the research and innovation development team at SOAS University of London, with a focus on increasing and diversifying funding for international collaborative projects.

    Funanani Nemaheni Stakeholder Engagement, Innovation, and Enterprise Manager

    Biography

    As Stakeholder, Innovation, and Enterprise Manager, Funi leads the development of impactful, cross-sector strategic partnership initiatives. Her role focuses on fostering collaboration and commercialisation through both internal and external partnerships, all in alignment with the Institute’s vision and mission. Prior to this, Funi worked at the global offices of UCL and Imperial College, where she led strategic partnerships management across Africa and the Middle East. Before that, she gained valuable experience in International Development, working in various conflict- and post-conflict-affected countries across Africa.

    Cathy Mulligan Advanced Research Fellow

    Biography

    Cathy is an interdisciplinary researcher with a strong background in digital technologies for sustainability and resilience. She has held Fellowships with the World Economic Forum for several years and was an Expert member of the UN Secretary General's High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation. Cathy holds a Master’s in Engineering for Sustainable Development and a PhD from the University of Cambridge.  

  • Dr Gareth Tear

    Dr Gareth Tear Postdoctoral Research Associate

    Biography

    Gareth is a researcher in physical security including ballistics and explosives with an emphasis on the use of large data sets and cyber physical systems. His background includes an experimental PhD in ballistics at Imperial College London and co-founder of Synbiosys Ltd., a materials innovation company which patented and licenced a novel armour material.

  • Professor PJ Beaghton

    Professor PJ Beaghton Professor of Practice in Computing

    Biography

    PJ is a Professor of Practice in Computing and Security Science Fellow at the Institute. His work at ISST focuses on security of financial systems (FinSec). He previously managed a global statistical arbitrage hedge fund for 12 years and before that was a Managing Director and senior quant trader at Salomon Brothers.

  • Dr Christoph Beischl

    Dr Christoph Beischl Space Policy and Law Researcher and Consultant, and Associate Deputy Director, London Institute of Space Policy and Law

    Biography

    Christoph is a long-standing Space Policy and Law researcher and consultant, as well as the Associate Deputy Director of the London Institute of Space Policy and Law (ISPL). As ISST Security Science Fellow, his focus is on supporting the newly established CARS, addressing space-related aspects of resilience and security, especially from a policy and legal perspective. His further research interests include East Asian, UK and European space policy and law; institutionalised space cooperation; space terminology; responsible behaviour in space; space safety; and the space-related use of AI. He is also a member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) and the German SichTRaum space research network.

    Biography

    Saira is the Digital Health Lead at the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Security Science Fellow at ISST, and honorary consultant in respiratory medicine at St Mary’s Hospital. Saira has spearheaded Imperial College London's collaboration for healthcare cybersecurity.

    Dr Hamed Haddadi Reader in Human-Centred Systems

    Biography

    Hamed is a Reader in Human-Centred Systems at the Department of Computing at Imperial College London. His research interests are in User-Centred Systems, IoT, Applied Machine Learning, Privacy, and Human-Data Interaction. He is part of Imperial-X (I-X) where he leads the Privacy and Security Research Area. He is an Academic Fellow of the Data Science Institute and an Associate member of the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research.

    Biography

    Chris is a Security Science Fellow of the Institute for Security Science and Technology, where he was Co-Director until 2019. He was Deputy Principal of the Faculty of Engineering from September 2006 until October 2008. His research is in cyber security, data analytics and semantics-based program analysis.

    Biography

    John is Reader in Physics and Security Science Fellow at the Institute. His research interests are varied with particular interest in heavy quark decays. John has started companies in a range of areas, including renewable energy, air pollution analysis and biotechnology.

    Sally Leivesley Managing Director at Newrisk Limited

    Biography

    Sally is a Consultant Security Science Fellow, and works nationally and internationally with academic and other institutions to advance the resilience of infrastructure, institutions, society and the environment against catastrophic risks. Sally trained with the British Home Office as a Scientific Adviser for protection of the public, infrastructure and government under conditions of strategic nuclear attack and has worked with international scientists on catastrophic risk analysis across many sectors of business and industry. Sally has a PhD in Policy and Administration from the University of London, is a Fellow of the RSA, a Member of RUSI, the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists, and the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators.

    Professor Emil Lupu Professor of Computer Systems

    Biography

    Emil leads the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research at Imperial College London and is the Deputy Director of the PETRAS IoT Security Research Hub. He serves a Security Science Fellow with the Institute for Security Science and Technology, and heads the Resilient Information Systems Security Group.

    Professor Julie McCann Professor of Computer Systems and Vice Dean for Research in the Faculty of Engineering

    Biography

    Julie A. McCann is a Professor in Computer Systems with Imperial College London and is currently Vice Dean Research in the Faculty of Engineering. She leads the Adaptive Emergent Systems Engineering Research (AESE) research group who examine cyber-physical interaction to design better sensor-based systems. She is Deputy Director of PETRAS IoT Cybersecurity Hub, Critical Ecosystems Lead for the Alan Turing Institute, Imperial PI on the EPSRC programme grant Science for Sensor Systems Software and heads up the CHEDDAR Communications Hub. 

  • Dr Robbie Murray

    Dr Robbie Murray Lecturer in Photonics

    Biography

    Robbie is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Photonics in the Physics Department, developing next-generation mid-infrared light sources for applications across healthcare and security. His work spans nonlinear optics, laser physics, ambient mass spectrometry, and the physics and chemistry behind ultrafast laser-tissue interactions.  His full publication list is on  Google Scholar ,  and he can be found on  Twitter  and  LinkedIn .

    Dr William G Proud Reader in Shock Physics

    Biography

    Bill is Reader in Shock Physics at the Department of Physics, and a Security Science Fellow at the Institute. His main research interest is into high strain rate properties of a wide range of materials, both inert and energetic. Bill is the academic course director for the MSc Security and Resilience course.
