With this theme we will be developing and understanding routes to deliver nature positive systems, going beyond zero pollution to actively benefit the environment. Our researchers are taking a systems approach to developing socio-technical and socio-ecological solutions to pollution.

The theme encompasses areas such as circular economy approaches; understanding the co-benefits of tackling pollution; regenerative, climate-smart, agriculture and forestry approaches; blue-green land and water systems; product servitisation; environmentally positive cities; climate resilience of new investments; system design; and upcycling of wastes.

2050 calculator

The 2050 Calculator is a uniquely open and transparent energy model that can be used by governments, stakeholders and the public to understand how to decarbonise a region or country, and to develop evidence-based policies. It was originally developed for use in the UK but is now being used in over 30 countries.

Life cycle approaches

The Imperial Network of Excellence in Sustainability through Life Cycle Approaches, led by Dr Onesmus Mwabonje from the Centre for Environmental Policy, brings together and connects life cycle-related research and researchers across Imperial to foster collaborations and facilitate networking, share knowledge and contribute to advancements within the life cycle field.

Supporting businesses to adopt sustainable models

The Leonardo Centre, led by Professor Maurizio Zollo from Imperial College Business School, has a mission to tackle the two big challenges currently faced by business and the world at large: environmental and social regeneration. Professor Nick Voulvoulis from the Centre for Environmental Policy, researches water in the circular economy and leads the research collaboration with Veolia on the Circular Economy.
