Experimental Studies of Magnetically Driven Plasma Jets
, Astrophysics and Space Science, Vol: 336, Pages: 41-46, ISSN: 1572-946XWe present experimental results on the formationof supersonic, radiatively cooled jets driven by pressuredue to the toroidal magnetic field generated by the 1.5 MA,250 ns current from the MAGPIE generator. The morphologyof the jet produced in the experiments is relevant toastrophysical jet scenarios in which a jet on the axis of amagnetic cavity is collimated by a toroidal magnetic fieldas it expands into the ambient medium. The jets in the experimentshave similar Mach number, plasma beta and coolingparameter to those in protostellar jets. Additionally theReynolds, magnetic Reynolds and Peclet numbers are muchlarger than unity, allowing the experiments to be scaled toastrophysical flows. The experimental configuration allowsfor the generation of episodic magnetic cavities, suggestingthat periodic fluctuations near the source may be responsiblefor some of the variability observed in astrophysical jets.Preliminary measurements of kinetic, magnetic and Poyntingenergy of the jets in our experiments are presented and discussed, together with estimates of their temperature andtrapped toroidal magnetic field.

A Bright Spatially-Coherent Compact X-ray Synchrotron Source
, Nature Physics, ISSN: 1745-2473Each successive generation of x-ray machines has opened up new frontiers inscience, such as the first radiographs and the determination of the structureof DNA. State-of-the-art x-ray sources can now produce coherent high brightnesskeV x-rays and promise a new revolution in imaging complex systems on nanometreand femtosecond scales. Despite the demand, only a few dedicated synchrotronfacilities exist worldwide, partially due the size and cost of conventional(accelerator) technology. Here we demonstrate the use of a recently developedcompact laser-plasma accelerator to produce a well-collimated,spatially-coherent, intrinsically ultrafast source of hard x-rays. This methodreduces the size of the synchrotron source from the tens of metres tocentimetre scale, accelerating and wiggling a high electron chargesimultaneously. This leads to a narrow-energy spread electron beam and x-raysource that is >1000 times brighter than previously reported plasma wiggler andthus has the potential to facilitate a myriad of uses across the whole spectrumof light-source applications.

Formation of episodic magnetically driven radiatively cooled plasma jets in the laboratory
, Astrophysics and Space Science, Vol: 322, Pages: 19-23, ISSN: 1572-946XWe report on experiments in which magneticallydriven radiatively cooled plasma jets were produced by a1 MA, 250 ns current pulse on the MAGPIE pulsed powerfacility. The jets were driven by the pressure of a toroidalmagnetic field in a “magnetic tower” jet configuration. Thisscenario is characterized by the formation of a magneticallycollimated plasma jet on the axis of a magnetic “bubble”,confined by the ambient medium. The use of a radial metallicfoil instead of the radial wire arrays employed in our previouswork allows for the generation of episodic magnetictower outflows which emerge periodically on timescales of∼30 ns. The subsequent magnetic bubbles propagate withvelocities reaching ∼300 km/s and interact with previouseruptions leading to the formation of shocks.

The evolution of magnetic tower jets in the laboratory
, Physics of Plasmas, Vol: 14, ISSN: 1089-7674The evolution of laboratory produced magnetic jets is followed numerically throughthree-dimensional, nonideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The experiments are designed tostudy the interaction of a purely toroidal field with an extended plasma background medium. Thesystem is observed to evolve into a structure consisting of an approximately cylindrical magneticcavity with an embedded magnetically confined jet on its axis. The supersonic expansion producesa shell of swept-up shocked plasma that surrounds and partially confines the magnetic tower.Currents initially flow along the walls of the cavity and in the jet but the development ofcurrent-driven instabilities leads to the disruption of the jet and a rearrangement of the field andcurrents. The top of the cavity breaks up, and a well-collimated, radiatively cooled, “clumpy” jetemerges from the system.
