The FoNS-Make-A-Difference! competition ran for a 3rd successful year in 2016.

Over 100 undergraduate students attended our Ideas and Teambuilding Workshops, and 70 students from across the departments of Chemistry, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Physics, as well as from Medicine and Engineering, formed teams and applied to take part in Stage 1.

In June 2016, three teams of students from across the Faculties of Natural Sciences, Engineering and Medicine were selected to go through to the final stages of the competition:

The Winners

At an event on 26 October 2016, the three teams presented their projects to an invited audience and a VIP panel of judges comprising Professor Lord Robert Winston, Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies, Imperial College London; Professor Sir John Pendry, Chair in Theoretical Solid State Physics, Department of Physics, Imperial College London; and Dr Ruth Allan, of Deloitte. 

The winners of FoNS-MAD 2016 were announced as Team LipidSense who presented their idea for a simple and rapid test of peroxide concentration in frying oil to determine if it is suitable and safe for consumption and re-use.
