Interior of the CERN Hadron Colider

We build and run experiments to measure interactions of particles at the smallest accessible scales. We search for new fundamental particles, new forces and new phenomena and the knowledge gained helps us to understand the physics of the Universe. To be able to do this, we need to develop advanced technologies and techniques, in accelerator and detector design, data readout and handling, and data analysis which often uses machine learning techniques. These new technologies and techniques can also be exploited to benefit science and society, for example through improved cancer radiation therapies and developing sustainable energy sources.
