As a Department, we believe that anyone should have the opportunity to access a high-quality education within Life Sciences regardless of their socio-economic background. We are committed to increasing the proportion of students that join us for their degrees from underprivileged backgrounds. For more information about the Department’s Outreach activities, please see the Outreach page.
The Department has implemented a Widening Participation studentship scheme to increase the diversity of postgraduate students, including applicants who graduated from non-Russell Group universities, as well as individuals from underrepresented groups (e.g. BAME students). Through the Doctoral Training Program (DTP), the Department has recruited a total of 6 Widening Participation students in 2020-2021. In order to provide more support to candidates from the widest possible pool of potential students, the DTP held a remote Q&A session covering aspects of the application process, the interviews and details of the training programme.
