Application and Selection Process

Applications for MultiSci 2025 entry will open on 26 September 2024 at midday (BST).

To make an application, you will be required to submit an initial online application form

Please read the contents of this page carefully and thoroughly before commencing your application. It will provide you with important information about how to prepare and submit your application, as well as what will happen when you submit it.

1. Prepare and submit your application

We strongly recommend that you download the MS Word Application Template and use it to prepare your answers first. The template includes all questions that will appear in the online form.

You will need to provide details of two referees, at least one of whom should be familiar with your educational history, qualifications, and achievements. They will only be asked to provide references if you are offered an interview for MultiSci.

You are not required to upload a separate personal statement, CV, transcripts, or proof of nationality/residency status with your online application. However, if any information provided in the online application form is later found to be incorrect, it may result in an offer being withdrawn.

Please do not email a completed template document to us. Applications will only be accepted via the online form.

Deadline: submit the MultiSci application form by 23:59 (GMT), Thursday 21 November 2024

2. Application Review

During application review, personal data from application forms are redacted to ensure a fair selection process without bias (conscious or unconscious) towards gender, race, age, disability, or educational institution(s) previously attended.

Applications that meet Imperial’s academic eligibility criteria are reviewed by the MultiSci Leadership Team who consider whether research interests match MultiSci themes, and if an applicant’s academic/employment journey so far indicates potential to complete a PhD.

Three academics from Imperial independently score each application, evaluating motivation, as well as personal and academic attributes needed to successfully undertake a PhD.

All applicants will be notified before the end of January 2025 as to whether they are invited to interview or not.

3. Interviews

Approximately 24 applicants will be invited to an online interview. We anticipate interview panels to take place mid-late February 2025. Information on interview format will be provided to all invited applicants nearer the date.

For this stage of the selection process, personal data on application forms is not redacted.

Referees will be asked to submit their references prior to the interviews.

We expect to email offers to successful candidates towards the end of February 2025.

4. My Imperial

If you are made a MultiSci offer, you will be required to submit an application for admission to Imperial through the university portal (My Imperial). This will enable the university’s admissions team to make appropriate checks on your academic qualifications, English language requirements and fee status.

We will host a webinar on 10 October 2024 at 12.00 (BST). This will be an opportunity for anyone interested to find out more about the about the structure of MultiSci, as well as the opportunities and support that we provide to students on this programme.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Statement

MultiSci aims or a fair, accessible recruitment and selection process that is free from bias (conscious or unconscious) towards applicant gender, race, age, disability, or socioeconomic background. This aligns with UKRI and MRC policies and principles for equality, diversity and inclusion, as well as Imperial College London’s EDI Strategy. To do this, and to ensure that candidate selection is based on aptitude and potential for successfully completing a PhD with MultiSci, we will:

  • where possible, remove personal details (name, gender, age, race, disability declaration) from your application before sending for review/scoring.
  • where appropriate, give consideration to any socio-economic/widening participation indicators you declare when assessing your application.

Why are we still asking for this data?

To monitor our recruitment and selection processes, we still need to collect EDI-related data. You will be asked to provide it in the application form, but it will be anonymised before analysis. We value a diverse student and research community and if we find the MultiSci application process could be a potential barrier to this, we will take positive action to try and change it.

Unless a question is indicated as mandatory, you can choose not to provide us with  requested information – your application will be treated the same way regardless of what  you decide to share with us

For more information, please refer to the MultiSci frequently asked questions page, and for any queries not covered there, please email the PG Team (feopostgradtm@imperial.ac.uk).
