Meet Dr Steven Millership
What course do you teach on and what is your role?
I am a Module lead for MSc Applied Genomics, teaching the 'In Vivo Modelling & Use of Human Material & Data' and 'Core and Professional Skills' modules
How has your career led you to teach?
I have always had a passion to teach and to support the next generation of research scientists and academics. My postdoctoral work was within a core MRC funded institute which did not include UG/PG teaching, so I was delighted to be involved with Dr Toby Andrew as part of MSc Human Molecular Genetics initially, before becoming lead for two modules within MSc Applied Genomics after moving to the Dept MDR.
What aspect of the course do you enjoy teaching the most?
The students! Each year they bring new energy, are full of interest, enthusiasm and academic excellence.
What do you hope your students will go on to achieve on completion of this course?
Research and development, further teaching, industry roles: always with a view to delivering impactful work.
How do you balance teaching with your research?
We are lucky that the Department provides so many high-quality programmes with excellent content, delivery and some brilliant scientific minds. It is highly rewarded to use your own research to provide real-world context to the scientific content that we are delivering. I find it highly rewarding to be involved with the teaching in our Dept to complement the research aspect.
