What attracted you to the MRes in Biomedical Research?
In contrast to my undergraduate studies, during which I primarily focused on building my foundational and theoretical knowledge, my time in the MRes Biomedical Research program provided me with valuable hands-on experience through involvement in two different projects from different fields in biomedicine. This program afforded me a deeper insight into the workings of the research field and offered practical insights into the demands of being a researcher.
What specific aspects of the teaching or course format did you enjoy the most?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience was completing two research projects successfully, despite lacking prior experience. I particularly enjoyed the problem-solving aspect inherent in both projects, along with the opportunity to delve into grant writing, which was entirely new and intriguing for me. Working on grants related to my projects provided valuable insight into the detailed process of drafting proposals. Additionally, I found certain Wednesday lectures, typically conducted by various researchers, scientists, and professors from different departments at Imperial, to be particularly engaging and enriching.
How do you think the course will impact your future career?
While this program provided me with invaluable research experience, it's equally important to recognize the personal and professional skills I developed throughout its duration. I am confident that these skills will be beneficial in the long term, whether I pursue my own research endeavours or work within an industry setting. This course has significantly enhanced my education by equipping me with academic writing proficiency, organizational abilities, troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in data analysis.
Why did you choose Imperial College London?
In addition to its esteemed reputation, Imperial College London stands out as one of the leading institutions for research. My aim was to engage in independent projects and elevate my skills. Imperial College aligned perfectly with my academic aspirations, offering both a conducive environment for research and a dynamic student community. I perceived Imperial College, especially this particular course, as an ideal match for my objectives and ambitions.
What did you most appreciate about your time at Imperial?
The course's structure involving two projects provided an exceptional experience. I also want to acknowledge the accessibility of course directors and administrators, which was particularly helpful for me as an international student navigating various concerns. Both my supervisors and lab colleagues in both projects were incredibly supportive and accommodating, readily assisting me with numerous inquiries and uncertainties. In summary, my overall experience was genuinely remarkable.
What are you doing now? And how has the course helped with your career?
I currently hold the position of Scientist-I at Perfect Day Private Limited in Bangalore, India. During my time at Imperial. I've been involved in diverse projects. Initially, I focused on exploring CRISPR-inhibited strategies for a rare liver genetic disease. This enabled me to acquire extensive experience in molecular biology and microbiology techniques. In my second project, I worked on optimizing a UPLC-MS assay for clinical studies, involving assay development and metabolic profiling of human biological samples. My interest lies in both domains, and I'm driven to contribute to the multidisciplinary landscape of the life sciences and healthcare industry. The Biomedical Research course at Imperial College provided me with the foundation to embark on this career path.
