A comprehensive one day update in haemostasis and thrombosis for part 2 candidates and consultants
This is an intensive one-day course based on practical management of the major problems in haemostasis and thrombosis. It begins with a review of core mechanisms in the haemostatic network as a basis for understanding laboratory tests and clinical problems. It then moves on to the essential principles of laboratory testing with an emphasis on understanding how tests are performed to allow correct interpretation of difficult or borderline cases and detection of artefacts. The limitations of tests and the importance of clinical correlation are explained.
Major clinical problems such as lupus, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, cancer, acquired inhibitors and platelet function testing are all covered by experienced consultants who have specialised in haemostasis and thrombosis and who have many years’ experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. The day is completed with an extensive and open-ended session on problem-solving with clinical examples and model exam questions.
Target audience
- Senior SpRs preparing for part 2 FRCPath
- Consultants taking up new responsibilities for haemostasis
Key speakers and course organisers
- Professor Mike Laffan
