The London Scool of Surgery Training Programme's talented in-house model designer has developed a simulation model which can be used to teach both inguinal hernia repair (using mesh) and femoral hernia repair. This particular model is designed for General Junior surgical trainees (ST3 and ST4) to practice open hernia repair. The training is led by a consultant.
Every ST3 and ST4 General Surgical trainee in London has the opportunity to practise on this high fidelity model which is produced in-house.
ST5 and ST6 trainees are also taught to repair inguinal hernias but for these trainees a different model is used. These more senior trainees are taught the laparoscopic TAPP procedure.
The femoral hernia was added to the model after requests by the trainees who have limited exposure to the procedure in theatre.
