The London School of Surgery Training Programme has evolved over 15 years with up to 200 senior general surgical trainees receiving monthly, consultant-led training. It is the first programme of its kind in Europe to integrate laboratory-based simulated training for surgical trainees into clinical practice for a wide range of procedures.
The programme was developed to provide systematic, structured, hands-on experience in light of reduced working hours and increased awareness for patient safety, and expertise development within a rapidly changing world. It is based on a strong educational framework and competency assessment methodology and has been designed to match the trainees’ stage in clinical practice, and tailored to each individual’s needs and abilities.
Our facilities
The Clinical Skills laboratory is a purpose-built wet lab which can comfortably accommodate up to 12 trainees at a time. We are grateful to Storz for the long-term loan of laparoscopic trainers and to Covidien who donate a substantial quantity of sutures and staplers. The Clinical Skills Centre also has a purpose-built seminar room with large-screen, wall-mounted monitors connected to PCs for trainer presentations, plus a suite of communications teaching rooms.
