World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 18-24 November

A global action plan to tackle the growing problem of resistance to antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines was endorsed at the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly in May 2015. One of the key objectives of the plan is to improve awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education and training. WAAW is celebrated annually from 18 to 24 November.

Each year as part of our Patient and Public Engagement, Involvement and Participation (PPIEP) Strategy, our Unit highlights World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, usually via an Antimicrobial Amnesty event and stand.

This year, in light of COVID-19, the Unit has devised a video and social media campaign to raise awareness instead, encouraging others to share their “antimicrobial stories” by tweet, photo or short video.

Our multi-lingual staff and students of the HPRU promote World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2022 in their native languages.

What have antimicrobials ever done for us?

Here, the children of HPRU staff explain the importance of antimicrobials in underpinning modern medicine, in an amusing and accessible way. Its purpose is to make people think broadly about how important antimicrobials are to their wellbeing.
