Dr Chaand Nagpaul is a GP partner who has worked in his practice in North London since qualifying as a GP over three decades ago.
He has spent most of his professional life representing and supporting GPs and doctors. He was elected onto the BMAs GPs committee in 1996 and later becoming its chair between 2013-17. He was thereafter elected as the first ever ethnic minority chair of the BMA Council from 2017-2022, and led the profession thorough the Covid pandemic.
On concluding his BMA Chair tenure last year, he has returned to work substantially in his practice, and represents his local GPs as Chair of Harrow Local Medical Committee. He has also recently been elected onto the RCGP UK Council.
He has long advocated for racial equality in medicine and chairs the BMA’s Forum for Racial and Ethnic Equality and is a board member of the NHS Race and Health Observatory.
He is a board member of the charity Doctors in Distress, which aims to protect and promote the mental health of all healthcare professionals and to prevent self-harm and suicide.
He has been awarded the CBE for services to primary care, a Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners and an Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health. He is listed in the Health Service Journal’s top 50 most influential ethnic minority leaders in the NHS.
