What are the masterclasses?
Between 5th August and 8th August 2024 MEdIC (Medical Education Innovation and Research Centre, Imperial College London) will be running a series of free, virtual half day Masterclasses in Medical Education for 300 UK medical students.
Why are we running the masterclasses?
We recognise that students are increasingly interested in developing skills and knowledge around medical education, with many considering incorporating education into their future career. However, not all students have the same access to educator-training, mentorship and career support. The masterclasses will provide students with an opportunity to explore current challenges in medical education and some novel solutions, and show you how to take the next steps in developing their careers in medical education.
Who can apply?
All medical students from UK medical schools can apply to the masterclasses, but we particularly welcome applicants who have entered medicine from widening participation programmes, or who may currently lack educator role models and mentors.
How much does it cost?
This a free event for UK medical students.
What is the structure and what will the sessions be about?
The masterclass will run virtually on four mornings between Monday 5th August and Thursday 8th August 2024. The four themes are:
- Introduction: the challenges of educating doctors for the 21st Century. Are we getting it right?
- Technology solutions
- 21st Century clinical teaching solutions
- Developing your career in medical education
Sessions will include inspirational guest speakers, an introduction to relevant literature, and debate. We encourage students to attend all the sessions, however this not mandatory.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. At the end of the Medical Education masterclass students will be asked to submit a short, written reflective piece. Upon submission of this, students will receive a certificate of attendance for their portfolios.
How will I be selected?
300 UK medical students will be able to attend the masterclasses in Medical Education. If there are more applications than spaces, applicants will be chosen randomly.
What is the Medical Education Masterclass competition?
Throughout the masterclass, we will ask students to consider singly, or in groups, potential ideas for an innovation in medical education. At the end of the series, students will be invited to submit a poster. Students will be given clear guidance on how to approach this once they have been chosen to take part.
The winning project proposals will be supported in submitting a poster presentation to a national conference and, if their submission is accepted, will receive funding to cover conference fees, and reasonable travel and accommodation costs for one person.
