Call for Independent ‘NHLI Research Fellowship’ applications

Are you an excellent researcher with a clear research vision and looking to secure a personal fellowship and establish your own research group?

The National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) at Imperial College wishes to nurture the next generation of outstanding researchers and invites applications for an attractive and flexible fellowship scheme for those wishing to develop an independent research career. The NHLI will cover the cost of your salary, commensurate with experience, for up to 12 months (with the possibility of extending to 18 months), plus modest consumable costs, whilst you develop and submit an application(s) for an independent externally funded fellowship. This scheme is open to both clinical and non-clinical scientists.

Essential requirements

We are looking for researchers at any stage of their career who have:

  • An excellent research track record, including a PhD;
  • Demonstrated an excellent start to their research careers, in either clinical or basic science, with clear potential to secure a fellowship from external funders;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Publications in high quality journals;
  • The ability to demonstrate a clear research vision.

Support provided

We will provide mentorship from world-leading academics to enable you to reach your full potential. We also offer a very supportive environment for you to develop your research career, with full access to training courses and support within the College, including the award winning Postdoc and Fellows Development Centre and People and Organisational Development. You will be entitled to 10 days learning and development per year and will have access to a range of courses and workshops, as well as support for developing your fellowship application(s) and mock interviews. There will also be an opportunity during the fellowship for you to get involved with one of our teaching programmes at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.

For staff who are successful in obtaining a subsequent substantive externally funded Fellowship, at Intermediate or Career Development level, we would normally support them applying for a tenured academic position within the College, which, subject to satisfactory academic progress would lead to tenure.

NHLI is committed to promoting equality for all within the workplace and creating a diverse, inclusive and supportive working environment. Our fellowships are offered on a full time or part time basis and we encourage applications who have taken a career break and wish to return to research.

To apply

Please email your CV, with a full publication list and details of all previous applications for fellowships, a short proposal (~500 words) outlining your research ideas, plans for developing an application for a personal research fellowship and how your proposal fits with the NHLI Strategic Plan to nhlires@imperial.ac.uk. The deadline for applications is 28 January 2022 (4pm).
