Our Section aims to understand the function of metabolically relevant cell systems at a molecular level, with the aim to find new therapeutic avenues for diabetes and related metabolic disorders. Dr Alejandra Tomas Catala Head of Section

The Section of Cell Biology and Functional Genomics aims to decipher the molecular basis of diabetes and related metabolic disorders. It employs advanced techniques in high-resolution microscopy and molecular cell biology, as well as an extensive range of in vitro and in vivo models for the study of the function of metabolic tissues in health and disease conditions

The Section encompasses internationally recognised groups with a strong basic research and translational angle in the field of islet biology, gut hormone endocrinology, and functional genomics.

Our research covers several areas including the study of islet endocrine cell physiology, identity and connectivity, biomarkers for type 2 diabetes, the role of nutrient regulated protein kinases, epigenetics, microRNAs, and the biology of the glucagon receptor family in relevant cell types, all key factors in the control of glucose homeostasis.

Study with us

We run an MSc course in Applied Genomics which includes modules on multiomics, methods for in vitro and in vivo experimentation, including the use of CRISPR for gene editing, grant writing, and a 6-month laboratory research project.

Our MSc provides a strong foundation in both theoretical and experimental tools to unravel the molecular and cellular mechanisms of complex diseases and other biological systems

Head of Cell Biology and Functional Genomics - Dr Alejandra Tomas Catala

Dr Alejandra Tomas Catala is a Reader in Cell Biology and Director of the Imperial Membrane Receptor and Diabetes Networks of Excellence. Her research focuses on the study of the spatiotemporal regulation of signalling of the glucagon receptor family in pancreatic islets and other relevant tissues, with direct application to the development of novel type 2 diabetes therapies. Dr Tomas Catala is highly interested in the application of advanced microscopy techniques and molecular cell biology approaches for the study of metabolically relevant cell systems. She leads a diverse group of researchers and strongly supports initiatives towards equal opportunities for women, parents and minorities in academic research.
