Coil coating is a process used to paint strips of steel, before the strips are cut and formed, for applications such as washing machine cases and warehouse cladding. To withstand the stresses from forming, the paint used must be tough and flexible even at low temperatures. The Erichsen cupping test is the industry-standard test for assessing whether the coating has been adequately formed. This project involves the modification of an existing Erichsen test machine to allow Erichsen cupping tests to be performed at a temperature range of -20°C to 50°C.
