ICEPT research is funded from a wide diversity of sources and delivered in collaboration with a wide range of research partners in other universities in the UK and elsewhere, leading consultancies and other experts. ICEPT's research portfolio is extensive and changes in response to events. Example projects are provided below.
- Between 2004 and 2010 ICEPT managed the juice fund applications process on behalf of npower. Working with npower and colleagues at Edinburgh and Surrey Universities, ICEPT developed and ran the process through which applicants were assessed and recommended for juice funding. View a short summary and history of the juice fund and funded projects.
- UKERC Technology and Policy Assessment - The TPA is a core UKERC activity and research theme providing evidence based assessment of contemporary policy issues. UKERC is the £18m flagship project of the UK Research Councils' Energy Programme. ICEPT has been running the TPA since the inception of UKERC in 2004, producing six major reports and numerous academic journal outputs. TPA reports are widely cited in White Papers, Select Committee Reports as well as the academic literature and mainstream media.
- UAE-UK Clean Energy Partnership - ICEPT is running the UK contribution to a joint research programme funded by DECC and the government of the UAE, collaborating with the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology.
- SUPERGen HiDEF- Highly Distributed Energy Futures. A consortium of UK Universities and Industrial Partners (EPSRC) -ICEPT is providing assessment of policy challenges for microgeneration.
- PV 21, the thin film photovoltaics Supergen Consortium - ICEPT is contributing the techno-economic workstream of EPSRC's inorganic PV consortium, working with the Universities of Bath, Durham, Southampton, Northumbria and others, and a range of industry partners including Pilkington, Millbrook Instruments and Plasma Quest.
- Carbon Capture and Storage: Realising the Potential - ICEPT is collaborating with the Universities of Sussex and Edinburgh in order to understand the technology, policy and economic issues associated with the government's aspirations for the demonstration and commercialisation of CCS during the 2020s. This work is funded through UKERC's Flexible Funding programme
- BP Sustainable Energy Challenge - ICEPT is working in a consortium including Princeton, MIT, Cambridge and Tsinghua focused on key challenges for sustainable energy in the coming decades. ICEPT is providing an innovation systems approach to issues related to water scarcity and land remediation.
- Biomass Futures: www.biomassfutures.eu
- A comprehensive demand & supply analysis for the role biomass can play in the heat, electricity & CHP and transport sector in the EU27 and Member States. This is a collaborative project supported by the EU Commission FP7 programme
- Aquafuels: www.aquafuels.eu
- This project aims to establishing the state of the art on research and technological development for the sustainable production of 2nd generation biofuels from algae and aquatic biomass. We are leading the lifecycle and economic assessment. This is an EU FP7 coordination action
- NILE (New Improvements in Lignocellulosic Ethanol): www.nile-bioethanol.org
- A 4-year Integrated Project that aims to identify the best process for cost effective production of bioethanol from lignocelluloses. We investigated the environmental and commercial performance of the technology.
- BEST (Bioethanol for Sustainable Transport): www.best-europe.org
- This project aims to help the market penetration of bioethanol as a vehicle fuel, and the introduction and wider use of flexible fuel vehicles and ethanol cars on the market. We undertook an extensive evaluation of the real life carbon savings from ethanol used in vehicles across Europe.
