The CMS experiment consists of a number of detector subsystems that are each designed to measure different properties of the subatomic debris that emerges from the particle collisions taking place at its centre. By combining the outputs of each of these, physicists are able to reconstruct what took place and gain an insight into the underlying physics.
Of these subsystems, the Imperial College CMS group is involved with:
- the Electromagnetic Calorimeter;
- the Calorimeter Trigger, and;
- the Silicon Strip Tracker.
