We are currently inviting applications for PhD studentships funded by the Grantham Institute. Please note applications for the Taylor PhD studentships are now closed and we are no longer recruiting for new PhD students to join the NERC-funded SSCP DTP.
Fully funded PhD Studentships available at the Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment, Imperial College London
We invite applications for fully funded PhD studentships researching areas of climate and environmental science as seen below, to work under the supervision of the following academic staff:
PhD Topics and Supervisors
- Tracking Climate-Related Health Risks in England. Supervised by: Dr Gary Konstantinoudis
- Next-generation greenhouse gas emissions estimation using AI, big data and atmospheric measurements. Supervised by: Dr Heather Graven
- Exploring Stratified Turbulent Mixing by Shear Instabilities in Coastal Waters. Supervised by: Dr Adrien Lefauve
- Developing new tools to assess aerosol impacts on convective clouds. Supervised by: Dr Ed Gryspeerdt
- Electromagnetic Induction in the Earth and/or Other Planetary Bodies. Supervised by: Dr Fiona Simpson
- A New Global Tropical Cyclone Model. Supervised by: Professor Ralf Toumi

The Studentships
The funding will include 3.5 years of funding, which will cover:
- Home tuition fees at UKRI indicative rate (£4,786pa for 2024/25)
- A maintenance stipend, paid in equal monthly instalments directly to your bank account (£21,237pa for 2024/25)
- A total of £5,000 is available during the duration of the project to contribute towards research expenses associated with the project, including conference costs, consumables, and travel for research purposes.
We welcome home and international candidates to apply, but for overseas applicants, any costs over those mentioned above will need to be covered by applicants or in exceptional cases by the department where the student is registered.
We host the NERC-funded PhD training programme: Science and Solutions for a Changing Planet Doctoral Training Partnership (SSCP DTP). Our NERC-funded, Grantham Institute-funded and aligned PhDs form an interdisciplinary cohort of over 175 researchers, taking part in in-person training and cohort activities.
How to Apply
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until late January.
