Capturing nonlinear dynamics of moderate speed multi-fluid flows
Asymptotic models are a powerful tool in describing the intricate dynamics of multi-fluid systems in a robust and efficient manner. The fluid-fluid interface is described through an evolution equation, which often includes non-local effects, such as the influence of inertia or electric fields. Coupled with direct numerical simulations (DNS) and comparing to existing experimental results in the literature, we provide exciting new insights into classical aspects of fluid mechanics (Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2016).
Related low-inertia models have been used in the past in qualitative predictions rather than the direct comparisons carried out here. In addition, such models do not predict essential features such as asymmetry and bistability even when ad hoc modifications are made. Comparisons between model solutions and DNS show excellent agreement at Reynolds numbers of O(103) found in recent experiments.
