Title: Handles and Heegaard Splittings

Abstract: I will give an introduction to the topological construction of handles and their uses, specifically how they can be used to create Heegaard splittings of 3 manifolds. I will then survey a range of applications of these constructions including Heegaard Floer  Homology and the Casson Invariant.
