Imperial space showcase 2024, sponsored by Satellite Applications Catapult

Unlock the future of space technology at the Imperial Space Showcase 2024, focusing on opportunities for collaboration between industry and universities. Learn how collaborative efforts can propel your business or research to new heights. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to connect, innovate, and grow.

Dive into the dynamic intersection of academic research and industrial innovation in three critical themes:

  • security
  • data science
  • regulation and innovation

Theme 1: Security: Unlock advanced space security solutions

Explore cutting-edge security technologies and strategies vital for safeguarding space assets. Ranging from the impacts of space weather and how that affects satellites and other orbiting craft, through to the resilience and security of wireless communications and signal processing, ensuring our extra-terrestrial infrastructure remains operational and secure is increasingly vital to life on planet earth.

The possibilities are literally out of this world, and the expert insights from Professor Jonathan Eastwood (Director of Space Lab at Imperial), Professor Bruno Clerckx (Professor of Wireless Communications and Signal Processing) and industry leader Maurizio Vanotti (Vice President for New Markets at OneWeb) will ensure this is both a thought-provoking and directly actionable session, with further opportunities to engage with Imperial’s researchers working across innovations in propulsion systems, space transportation, radar, advanced communication, and Earth observation.

Theme 2: Data Science: Harnessing the power of data in space

Data science is at the heart of modern space exploration and innovation. The second session of the day focuses on pioneering work being delivered by Imperial’s specialists and some of our core industry partners, including Professor Helen Brindley (Professor in Earth Observation), Dr Martin Archer (UKRI Stephen Hawking Fellow) and Marina Geymonat (Head of AI Lab at Leonardo).

Advances in AI, satellite technology and telescopes, sensors and computing technology has revolutionised our understanding of the physical world around us, from observing and predicting weather through to its use in legal and political disputes, such as deforestation and mining, and the discussion will also cover how our increasing use of big data to unlock the mysteries of the universe and mysteries of planetary dynamics in our solar system.

Theme 3: Regulation and Innovation: Navigating the future of space regulation and innovation

The intersection of regulation and innovation is critical for the sustainable growth of the space industry – and could be a game-changer for the UK’s economy. Insights from academic and innovation experts who are at the forefront of policy and regulation discussions will be shared during this session, and it’s a must-attend for anyone in public affairs, legal and regulatory aspects of the space industry.

We’re delighted to have, among our experts in this section, Professor Stuart Martin (Visiting Professor at Imperial), Dr Christoph Beischl (Associate Deputy Director at the London Institute of Space Policy and Law) and Professor Fabio Favata (former Head of Strategy at the European Space Agency), whose cross-cutting experience will help us navigate through the ever-evolving world of space exploration, technology innovation and ethical and regulatory access and approvals.
