In this course we are invited to join Sarah Davis in creating our own mediæval-style illuminated miniatures.
Some of the most beautiful objects to survive from the mediæval world in the west are the sumptuous illuminated manuscripts, often made by monks and nuns in the abbeys hat filled the medieval landscape. In their scriptoria they would work with some of the most precious materials, like gold leaf and lapis lazuli, to create stunning intricate designs, not only for great statement pieces, like the Book of Kells, but private books of hours and even legal documents.
On the course we will discover how to make an illuminated miniature. This is a highly detailed image embellished with gold leaf and colour that would have been used to decorate ancient and mediæval manuscripts. We will emulate as closely as possible the materials that would have been used by our medieval ancestors such as real gold leaf, vellum and even garlic juice!
At the end of the course you should have produced a gilded letter, a gilded and painted zodiac sign and a fully illuminated miniature - or at least be well on the way to creating one! You will also have the tools and techniques to hand to continue with this astonishingly beautiful and rewarding craft.
Traditional materials for illumination included animal-derived products, but vegan equivalents are available. We will start by using paper and modern gilding glues which are fully vegan, you will have an equally enlightening experience if you choose to stay vegan for the whole course. Please indicate before the start of the course if you require vegan alternatives.
To take part in this course you will need to purchase some equipment and materials. The equipment will be useful for you well after the course if you continue with this craft, and the materials will be used by you in the class. A list of all of these is given below and you will need to bring them with you to the first session. Please wait until the course is confirmed to run before buying any equipment or materials.
This course has a maximum capacity of 12 students.
