Unwin Postgraduate Prize in Mechanical Engineering Awarded to one PhD student and one MSc student at the end of their studies One of the four academic founders of the City & Guilds College in 1884, Professor Unwin was Head of Engineering for over twenty years. He pioneered research in hydraulics and material testing, and the teaching of engineering for industrial application.

Margaret Fishenden Centenary Memorial Prize Awarded for the best PhD thesis over the previous five year period Dr Fishenden was an industrial researcher in the Department during the 1930s and 1940s; co-author of seminal texbooks The Calculation of Heat Transmission (1936) and An Introduction to Heat Transfer (1950). Katopodis Prize Awarded for the best PhD thesis within the Thermofluids division Spyridon ("Spyros") Katopodis was an industrial case student in the Thermofluids division, studying transient emissions from diesel engines. He died in 2009. Harry Mitchell
Dr Ashraf Ben El-Shanawany Memorial Prize Awarded for outstanding achievement by a PhD or EngD student to include research, public outreach, innovation and entrepreneurial achievement Dr El Shanawany was an Engineering Doctorate student in the Nuclear group, who died in 2017, shortly after finishing his thesis entitled Uncertainty Quantification in Probabilistic Safety Analysis.
