Esther Perea, Senior Tutor, Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Never be afraid to ask us questions. In fact, we love it when you do!
Our undergraduate programmes are designed to challenge even the top A* students, but a supportive learning environment aims to help you stay on track.
Teaching is becoming more interactive, more challenging and also more supportive. Pre-class homework means more time for learning activities in class such as problem-solving, and with faster feedback we can adapt our study classes to students’ needs.
"In my role as Senior Tutor, I am responsible for the welfare and pastoral care of all undergraduate students. I liaise with Personal Tutors, Module Leaders, Year Organisers, Final Year Project Supervisors and the department's Education Office in order to identify students who might be struggling. We then ensure that the student is supported within the department and referred to the relevant university services. Every effort is made to ensure that students can perform to the best of their abilities, even when things do not go to plan."
Universities like Imperial can be a challenging academic environment, but to help our students reach their potential, there's a wide network of academic and wellbeing support to smooth the transition to university study including:
- a department buddy scheme
- a personal tutor
- a Senior Tutor
- our department's Student Wellbeing Advisor
- our department's Disabilities Officer and Imperial's Disability Advisory Service
- residential support teams in our halls of residence
- a multi-faith chaplaincy
- an international student support service, providing immigration advice, and a range of events and social activities throughout the year
The Department is supportive in all aspects of life in Imperial, for example, I personally benefited from the one-on-one maths tutorials, pastoral tutor support, and the student Teaching Assistants in electrical and computer laboratories. — Maya
“It is tough, but you can get through it. There are a lot of difficult things to get your head around but they are pretty cool topics which actually makes it pretty fun. All your class-mates will be in the same boat and it’s a great feeling when you come together to try and solve a problem.” — Rishil
The teaching staff in EEE are incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about their respective fields, and are always willing to help students. — Jason
I found the jump from school to Imperial very difficult at first. I found myself in a competitive environment that I hadn't experienced before. The improvement in my performance was aided through the network of support available in this department - in particular my tutor who was able to rebuild the confidence I was lacking. — Tasimat
