What is it like to study a Master's in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial?

Contact us: EEE MSc admissions eee.pgadmissions@imperial.ac.uk

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has a strong master's programme. We offer five master's courses and around 160 master's students join us each year.

The degrees are one-year full-time, and we have one intake a year, starting in October.

Through a blend of lectures, tutorials and practical laboratories, advanced technical engineering expertise is developed in parallel with communication, project management and leadership skills, all of which are vital for your future career.

Assessment techniques include exams, practical coursework and a substantial individual thesis project.

Decisions on your application will be made in 3 rounds and applicants will receive a decision by decision deadline below, depending on when they have submitted their application form. You should be aware that we cannot guarantee that places will be available, or that programmes will remain open in later rounds, so we recommend applying as early as as you can.

Entry requirements

If you are studying at a UK university we require a good 1st class honours degree. A typical offer would be for a 1st with 75% in the final year and 75% in the final individual project.

If you are studying overseas we look for an undergraduate degree passed at an equivalent grade to a UK 1st class honours degree. The guidance on international qualifications provides information on Imperial College's minimum entry requirements and on what grade is considered to be equivalent to an Upper Second class (2.1) UK degree.  We would be looking for a slightly higher grade than those given.

You will also need to meet Imperial College's Higher English language requirement. You do not need to have met the English language requirement when you make your application.

China
  • If you are studying in China at a Chinese university we only consider applicants from Key or Project 211 university with a final overall mark of 85% or better.
  • If you are studying on a joint programme that is taught entirely in China such as the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications/Queen Mary University of London joint degree, or Xi'an Jiatong Liverpool University that awards two degrees, our offer will be based on the UK degree.
  • If you are a Chinese applicant studying on a 2+2 China+UK programme where you are graded in the Chinese system for the first two years of study we require a minimum of 85% from China, alongside predicted 1st class marks from the UK university.   A typical offer would be for a 1st with 75% in the final year and 75% in the final individual project from your UK university.
Application process

We accept applications from the Autumn for the following academic year with all programmes starting in October.  Apply online

Application Deadlines

    • Applications for the 2025-26 cycle will be open on 27 September  2025 and close on 15 May 2026. Due to competitiveness of our courses, potential applicants are encouraged to submit their applications early to avoid disappointment.

You can apply for the course before your final degree result is known, and before you have met the English language requirement. Most applicants apply during the final year of their undergraduate degree.

Submitting your application

When you submit your application please:

  • Include a convincing personal statement (1-2 pages) as a separate self-contained document. This should describe your academic background, your interest in the area of the MSc, any relevant projects, any relevant work experience, and your future career plans.  The personal statement is a very important part of the selection process as it helps us assess your interest in the subject.  We want to hear why you are interested in the course and details of any skills, interests and attributes that you think you have that demonstrate for aptitude, motivation and interest in the course.
  • Include a CV-resume
  • Include transcripts of study, which you normally request from your university.  These should include all modules you have studied and the marks awarded.  If you are still studying for your undergraduate degree please also provide a list of modules you are taking in your final year.  If your transcript is not in English please include a translated copy.
  • Make sure you give your referee's university or company email address and not their personal one.

There is an application fee.

ATAS is not required for the MSc courses.

Re-applicants

If you applied in the previous year and your application was not successful you may apply again. In your new application you should demonstrate how your application has improved by additional education, research and/or relevant work experience.

Selection

The selection committee make their decision using the information provided in the application and the references. They make their decision based on academic performance so far, academic potential, references and your personal statement.

Once the selection committee have made their decision they return the application to the department's admissions team. We check the decision and send it to the Registry admissions team. The Registry team make a final check and process the decision. Once this is done you will be able to check the decision on the appication portal.

If you have applied for two courses your application is processed sequentially.  It will be sent to your first choice.  If they are unable to offer you a place it will be sent to the second choice.

Professional accreditation

Our MSc courses  are accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.

Our accreditation agreement with the IET is renewed every four years. The current accreditation agreement is due to be renewed for students starting their studies in the 2029-30 academic year.

Our MSc in Sensor Systems Engineering will be submitted for accreditation by the IET upon the graduation of the first cohort in 2025-26.
