All students and staff are required to understand and abide by the Department Safety Policy Statement, and to confirm that you have read it. Please check your emails for a reminder and link to the statement.


Emergencies and First Aid

Fire escape routes

To escape from the building, use the stairs to ground level. The assembly point is at the Queen’s Tower.

Safety induction and training

Building safety inductions are required for everyone working or studying on campus. This includes a range of information such as how to call for assistance or emergency services (via Security),  taking action in the event of fire, obtaining first aid and notifying of accidents, incidents or building problems.

Month One Safety Training (MOST)

Month One Safety Training (MOST) - is a compulsory online programme for all new employees and embedded external contractors. It follows on from the Day One Health and Safety Induction and should be completed and assessed within one month of engagement. By completing this course, you will

  • Understand your role in the college Health and Safety Management System (HSMS)
  • Know where you can find details of your responsibilities and
  • Know who can give you assistance and guidance in carrying them out
  • Know how the hazards and risks in the College are managed, including your role.

The purpose of this short online course - is to provide you with essential additional information and advice. It is designed to be convenient, active and interesting.

Risk Assessment Foundation Training (RAFT)

A web-based training module is available for those who need to take the RAFT course in order to conduct risk assessments.  This includes line managers (and those who supervise students and practical classes), those in charge of areas, equipment, or processes - and anyone who is asked to carry out a risk assessment.
