This module aims to provide students with sufficient mathematical tools and techniques to tackle a variety of design engineering problems. There is particular focus on the intuitive understanding of topics, rather than investing too much time grinding through the calculations. It is taught using the “inverted classroom” approach, where students are expected to have already watched specific lecture videos online before engaging with an interactive learning experience in class. This modern approach has proved to be extremely effective for other courses at Imperial and seems to make learning maths considerably more enjoyable.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be better able to:- Manipulate algebraic expressions of real and complex numbers, vectors, and matrices.
- Apply methods of mathematical analysis.
- Apply a range of numerical and computational methods.
- Construct mathematical models that capture the key features of an (engineering) problem.
- Interpret mathematical results and their implications in their wider (engineering) context.
- Represent mathematical concepts in sketches and visual forms.
