Clinical Diagnostics for Computer Scientists
SPEAKER
Giovanni Charles
ABSTRACT
Clinical diagnostics is the area of healthcare that deals with explaining a patient's illness. Software is being integrated to several parts of the diagnosis process to improve hit rates and reduce waiting times. This gives more patients access to treatment and saves vast amounts of healthcare spending. We will discuss the computing challenges at the different stages of a patient's diagnosis. For this we will focus on rare genetic disorders, which are among the hardest to diagnose. Emerging technologies are simplifying it by screening medical records on a large scale and interpreting our genetic code.
SPEAKER BIO
I studied computing at Imperial and then came to work at Mendelian. Over my 3 years here, I have seen it move from the Imperial College Incubator to a 10 person company in Old Street. I am now acting as a CTO and guiding our research, software development practices as well as prototyping clinical tools when I can.
