ICT provides Office 365, other utility software and site licenses for common teaching and research software. The department provides any other software required for undergraduate and MSc taught courses. Further information on laptop and workstation software can be found on the College's Devices and Software webpage.
In general, where there is a license fee for research software it needs to be funded from research grants. Often, however, research software is available at reduced price (or free) for non-commercial research or there may be an open-source alternative available.
The environment provides access to a range of standard software tools, such as an office suite, browsers, text/image editors, as well as a range of specialised software packages and code development tools.
Transferring files to and from the Linux environments
The best way to transfer files onto the Linux systems is using Secure Copy (scp), which uses the Secure SHell (SSH) protocol. There are clients available for most platforms.
Linux: If you are using Linux on your own machine, you can transfer data using the scp or rsync commands. The rsync command is better when transferring large files (since it can restart where it left off if the connection is broken) or large numbers of files (since it does not open a new connection for each file).
Windows: Winscp is a graphical program which can be used to drag-and-drop files onto the Linux systems.
OSX: Cyberduck is a graphical program, similar to Winscp, for transferring files.
