In order to progress to the next year of your studies, you must pass all modules in your current year of study. The information in this section aims to provide a quick reference of the process that should be followed in case you have failed to pass a module.

If you failed to pass a module in the regular examination period, and you do not have approved MCs for the module, you will normally be given the opportunity to take an in-session resit. This means that you will be offered a reassessment in August reassessment period of the same academic year, depending on how many modules you have passed and the nature of the module. To pass the module, you are required to achieve a pass mark on that reassessment.
Please note that in-session resits are not offered for the Electronics Design Project 1, Electronics Design Project 2, and the Year 3 Group Project.
If you fail to pass the module in the August exam period, and you do not have approved MCs for the module, you will be offered one more opportunity to attempt the module in the following academic year. This invitation to do a reassessment in the following year depends on the number of times that you have failed to pass the module and whether you will be able to complete the degree within the maximum period of registration that has been set by the College (BEng: maximum of 5 years; MEng: maximum of 6 years from the date of initial registration). This extra opportunity can be "in-attendance", which means that you need to attend all the activities of the module and submit all assessments, or "not in-attendance", where you are only required to come back to take a reassessment (usually an exam). In the latter case, the final module mark is based solely on that reassessment. If you achieve a module mark above the pass mark, and thus you pass the module, the final marks will be capped at the module's pass mark. The pass mark is 40% for Level 6 modules (Years 1 to 3), where Level 7 modules, most of modules in the 4th year, have a pass mark of 50%.
If you have failed to pass a module but you have approved MCs for the module, then your recorded mark upon passing the module will be uncapped, if this is your first attempt to pass the module. In this case, the final module mark will be computed considering all the components of the module(s). You need to achieve a final module mark of above the pass mark (pass mark is 40%, unless you are doing a 4th year module when it is 50%) in order to pass the module.
If you have failed pass an exam and thus failed progress to the next year, the EEE Education Office will contact you after the Board of Examiners meeting to let you know:
- The module(s) that require reassessment;
- If those reassessments will be for capped or uncapped marks;
- The format of the reassessment;
- Whether the reassessment will be offered in session or in the next academic year and if the latter, whether you need to be “in attendance” or “not in attendance”.
Important information for students that take reassessments in the following academic year: Students will be made aware of any syllabus changes, provided with lecture notes for the new syllabus (if these are not available online), and examined on the material currently taught.
However, please ensure that you do contact the module leader of the modules you are resitting to check in and ensure that you have access to everything you need.
