On feasible set-membership state estimators in constrained command governor control

    , Automatica, Vol: 37, Pages: 151-156, ISSN: 0005-1098

An analysis is presented on the feasibility issue in command governor (CG) control with deterministic set-membership state estimators for determining the state uncertainty set (SUS), viz. the set of all states which are compatible with measurements and a priori knowledge on the system. It is shown that the recipe of modifying standard receding horizon CG schemes based on the full knowledge of the state is effective provided that the latter is exactly computed at any time. On the contrary, when simple-shaped outer approximations of SUS are exploited for reducing the numerical complexity of the algorithm, loss of solvability or stability may result.

Comparison of RPWM and PWM space vector switching schemes for 3-level power inverters

, PESC Record - IEEE Annual Power Electronics Specialists Conference, Vol: 1, Pages: 138-145, ISSN: 0275-9306

In this paper, a comparative study of random and standard space vector PWM switching schemes for 3-level inverters is reported. An analysis on the Random and Standard schemes has been carried out. The advantages and disadvantages of both schemes are identified. Verified with measurements, these performance features will be described. The results provide valuable information for practicing engineers to evaluate the potential of these schemes.

A novel maximum power point tracker for PV systems

, Conference Proceedings - IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition - APEC, Vol: 1, Pages: 321-327

A novel technique for efficiently extracting the maximum output power from a solar panel under varying meteorological conditions is presented. The methodology is based on connecting a pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) DC/DC SEPIC or Cuk converter between a solar panel and a load or battery bus. The converter operates in discontinuous capacitor voltage mode whilst its input current is continuous. By modulating a small-signal sinusoidal perturbation into the duty cycle of the main switch and comparing the maximum variation in the input voltage and the voltage stress of the main switch, the maximum power point of the panel can be located. This approach ensures maximum power transfer under all conditions without using microprocessors for calculation. The tracking capability of the proposed technique has been verified experimentally with a 10W solar panel at different insolation levels and under simulated large-signal insolation level changes.

On the use of current sensors for control of power converters

, PESC Record - IEEE Annual Power Electronics Specialists Conference, Vol: 1, Pages: 302-307, ISSN: 0275-9306

This paper investigates the use of current sensors for control of power converters. The whole system only requires current sensing devices that generate signals in response to the current flowing in inductors. Besides, such as used in current programming and in maximum current protection, the sensed current and the rate of change of the inductor current in different circuit topologies are used to determine the input and output voltages. Apart from reducing the number of sensors, the proposed method provides inherent electrical isolation between the power conversion stage and the controller, and thus reducing noise coupling.

A unified control scheme for a bi-directional ac-dc converter with high power quality

, Conference Proceedings - IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition - APEC, Vol: 1, Pages: 74-80

This paper presents the modeling, analysis, and design of a thyristor-based ac-dc converter, featuring bi-directional power flow and unity power factor at the ac side in both powering and regenerating modes. The unified controller regulates the voltage at the dc side and operates as a feedback control in the powering mode and a feedforward control in the regenerating mode. Systematic procedures for designing the power conversion stage and the controller are given.

Predictive control for constrained LPV systems

    , Pages: 3074-3079

This paper addresses predictive control of constrained LPV systems. The objective is to optimize nominal performance while guaranteeing robust stability and constraint satisfaction. The latter goal is achieved by exploiting invariant sets and a receding horizon optimization procedure which provides a nonlinear correction to the nominal gain scheduled linear feedback. Feasibility domains for the gain scheduled and predictive controller are evaluated.
