Modeling, analysis and design of a thyristor-based BI-directional ac-dc converter
, Journal of Circuits, Systems and Computers, Vol: 13, Pages: 687-705, ISSN: 0218-1266This paper presents the modeling, analysis, and design of a thyristor-based ac-dc converter, featuring bi-directional power flow and unity power factor at the ac side in both powering and regenerating modes. By applying the y-parameter modeling technique and eliminating the effects of the high-frequency poles and zeros, small-signal models of the converter in both modes and a unified controller have been developed. The controller regulates the voltage at the dc side and operates as a. feedback controller in the powering mode and a feedforward controller in the regenerating mode. Systematic procedures for determining the circuit component values of the power conversion stage and the controller are presented. The operation is illustrated with the design of a 500-W, 100-V (ac)/200-V (dc) prototype, supplying to a motor-generator set. Experimental results showing operation in the powering mode, regenerating mode, and during mode changeover are included. Circuit operations during the transient of the changeover operation are clearly identified. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

A novel electrode power profiler for dimmable ballasts using dc link voltage and switching frequency controls
, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 19, Pages: 847-853, ISSN: 0885-8993A novel electrode power profiler for dimmable ballasts using series-resonant parallel-loaded inverter is presented. Dimming of the fluorescent lamp is primarily based on reducing the dc link voltage. Variations of the electrode power (due to the decrease in the lamp current) during dimming is compensated by changing the switching frequency of the inverter, so that the resonant tank circuit current is also varied. The current gradient along the electrode, which is due to the distributed lamp current property on the electrode, is deliberated in formulating the power and voltage models of the electrode. As the electrode heating relies on two near-orthogonal current components including the lamp current and the resonant tank circuit current, a simple feedback control is developed to derive the electrode power and program the electrode power. Experimental results of a T8 36 W prototype are verified with theoretical predictions.

Dimming control and characteristics of high-frequency operated metal halide lamps
, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, Vol: 19, Pages: 854-861, ISSN: 0885-8993Dimming control and characteristics of high-frequency operated metal-halide (MH) lamps are described. Lamp performance based on two ballast topologies is compared. The dimming range and stability control of the MH lamps are addressed. Dimming range from 100% to about 30% has been achieved. It is found that the combination of ballast topology and dimming method can affect the dimming performance.

The application of dynamic programming to optimal inventory control
, IEEE T AUTOMAT CONTR, Vol: 49, Pages: 676-685, ISSN: 0018-9286This paper concerns a class of deterministic impulse control problems, arising in inventory control. A notable feature of the problem formulation is the presence of an end-point constraint. In consequence, the value function may be discontinuous. Viability theory provides a characterization of the value function as the unique lower semicontinuous solution to a Bensoussan-Lions type quasi-variational inequality (QVI), suitably interpreted for nondifferentiable, extended valued functions. Yet there are few examples in the literature of the use of this analytical machinery. This paper provides such an example. The example, which concerns a problem for which the value function is neither everywhere finite valued nor continuously differentiable on the interior of its effective domain, illustrates what is involved in calculating subdifferentials and checking satisfaction of QVI (in a generalized sense). This paper also provides a summary of the underlying theory, and gathers in the Appendix proofs of key results.

A comparative study of maximum-power-point trackers for photovoltaic panels using switching-frequency modulation scheme
, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, Vol: 51, Pages: 410-418, ISSN: 0278-0046A comparative study of the maximum power point trackers using a switching-frequency modulation scheme (SFMS) for photovoltaic panels is presented. Some commonly used dc/dc converters, which are applied for the power conversion stage of those trackers, wili be examined. Method of locating the maximum power point (MPP) is based on injecting a small-signal sinusoidal perturbation into the switching frequency of the converter and comparing the ac component and the average value of the panel's terminal voltage. Apart from not requiring sophisticated computation of the panel power, this SFMS does not approximate the panel characteristics and can globally locate the MPP under wide insolation conditions. Tracking capability of the converters under investigation will be compared, using a 10-W solar panel with a controlled experimental setup. Theoretical predictions will be verified with experimental results. Operating characteristics at steady state and in large-signal change of the insolation (incident solar radiation) level will be studied.
