Power or Voltage Oscillation Damping in Power Systems
The invention provides a method, device and computer program product for providing improved control of power or voltage oscillation damping in a power transmission system. The device comprises a magnitude obtaining element (30) configured to obtain an instantaneous magnitude of a signal ( I ΔP I ) representing a deviating oscillation in at least one element (12) of the power transmission system, a slope investigating element (58) configured to determine the rate of change of the signal, and a first processing block (34) comprising an integrating element (38) configured to integrate the instantaneous magnitudes with an integrating factor (Ki) that is based on the determined rate of change. The first processing block is further configured to form a phase compensation angle (ϕc) based on the integrated instantaneous magnitude for use in a damping control signal generating unit in order to provide power or voltage oscillation damping of the system.

L∞ estimates on trajectories confined to a closed subset
, Journal of Differential Equations, Vol: 252, Pages: 1912-1933, ISSN: 1090-2732This paper concerns the validity of estimates on the distance of an arbitrary state trajectory from the set of state trajectories which lie in a given state constraint set. These so called distance estimates have wide-spread application in state constrained optimal control, including justifying the use of the Maximum Principle in normal form and establishing regularity properties of value functions. We focus on linear, L∞ distance estimates which, of all the available estimates have, so far, been the most widely used. Such estimates are known to be valid for general, closed state constraint sets, provided the functions defining the dynamic constraint are Lipschitz continuous, with respect to the time and state variables. We ask whether linear, L∞ distance estimates remain valid when the Lipschitz continuity hypothesis governing t-dependence of the data is relaxed. We show by counter-example that these distance estimates are not valid in general if the hypothesis of Lipschitz continuity is replaced by continuity. We also provide a new hypothesis, ‘absolute continuity from the left’, for the validity of linear, L∞ estimates. The new hypothesis is less restrictive than Lipschitz continuity and even allows discontinuous time dependence in certain cases. It is satisfied, in particular, by differential inclusions exhibiting non-Lipschitz t-dependence at isolated points, governed, for example, by a fractional-power modulus of continuity. The relevance of distance estimates for state constrained differential inclusions permitting fractional-power time dependence is illustrated by an example in engineering design, where we encounter an isolated, square-root type singularity, concerning the t-dependence of the data.

Tube-based robust nonlinear model predictive control
, International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control, Vol: 21, Pages: 1341-1353, ISSN: 1099-1239This paper extends tube-based model predictive control of linear systems to achieve robust control of nonlinear systems subject to additive disturbances. A central or reference trajectory is determined by solving a nominal optimal control problem. The local linear controller, employed in tube-based robust control of linear systems, is replaced by an ancillary model predictive controller that forces the trajectories of the disturbed system to lie in a tube whose center is the reference trajectory thereby enabling robust control of uncertain nonlinear systems to be achieved.

Control of a Wind Farm Based on Synchronous Generators With a Central HVDC-VSC Converter
, IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, Vol: 26, Pages: 1632-1640, ISSN: 1558-0679A control scheme for wind farms based on synchronousgenerators connected to a single power converter ispresented. The scheme is applicable to HVDC interfaced offshoreor remote wind farms. The proposed control scheme is based oncomputing the optimal wind farm electrical frequency dependingon the different incoming wind speeds. The power converterregulates the system frequency by adjusting the power injected tothe HVDC circuit. Fault ride-through is also possible by reducingrapidly the injected active power. The proposed scheme is validatedby means of simulations with a wind farm composed of fourwind turbines.

Flow estimation of boundary layers using DNS-based wall shear information
, International Journal of Control, Vol: 84, Pages: 1310-1325, ISSN: 1366-5820This article investigates the problem of obtaining a state-space model of the disturbance evolution that precedes turbulent flow across aerodynamic surfaces. This problem is challenging since the flow is governed by nonlinear, partial differential-algebraic equations for which there currently exists no efficient controller/estimator synthesis techniques. A sequence of model approximations is employed to yield a linear, low-order state-space model, to which standard tools of control theory can be applied. One of the novelties of this article is the application of an algorithm that converts a system of differential-algebraic equations into one of ordinary differential equations. This enables straightforward satisfaction of boundary conditions whilst dispensing with the need for parallel flow approximations and velocity–vorticity transformations. The efficacy of the model is demonstrated by the synthesis of a Kalman filter that clearly reconstructs the characteristic features of the flow, using only wall velocity gradient information obtained from a high-fidelity nonlinear simulation.

Novel silicon-embedded coreless transformer for on-chip isolated signal transfer
, IEEE Magnetics Letters, Vol: 2, ISSN: 1949-307XIn this letter, a novel silicon-embedded coreless transformer is proposed and demonstrated. The transformer is fabricated in the thick bottom layer of a silicon substrate and connected to the frontside through vias opened in the thin top layer where all other components of the system can be fabricated. A 5-turn coreless transformer fabricated using this monolithic transformer technology achieves a small area of 2 mm2 and a good voltage gain of larger than -0.8 dB (load = 50 Ω, best reported so far) from 12 to 100 MHz. This technology shows great potential for on-chip isolated signal transfer. © 2011 IEEE.
